Definitions
Reader’s Typika
The reader’s typika is the service held in the absence of a priest. We currently have no settled priest but continue to meet on the Lord’s Day to pray together. This service lasts 30-45 minutes and we share a meal afterward.
Reader’s Vespers
Vespers simply means “evening” in Latin and while this service is traditionally held each evening, most parishes including ours hold it one day a week. The service lasts about a half hour and we usually share a glass of wine and light fare afterward.
Divine Liturgy
The Divine Liturgy is the central part of the life of the Church. This service has been celebrated at least each Sunday if not daily since Pentecost (A.D. 33). It is largely unchanged since the 5th century. Ours is held on Saturday by a visiting priest and all are welcome and Holy Communion is available to baptized Orthodox believers. It lasts approximately an hour followed by a meal and fellowship.
